The jazz band played two 1/2 hour sets for a large crowd at the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). Another amazing time for our Jazz students, and the audience. Look forward to our future performances!

March 6th, 2017 – Did Someone Say ORCHESTRA?!

March 27, 2017

The Orpheum Theatre, seated stage right – students, teachers, volunteers, staff, and parents; there were sixty of us there that night. The lights dim, the crowd hushes, and the student sitting next to me grows very self-conscious about the crinkling noises he makes as he tries to open the wrapper to his Kit Kat Bar. The concert masters walks on stage. The orchestra tunes. The conductor enters. The students fidget in their seats, brimming with anticipation. And then it all begins, and it begins in earnest. A fanfare of brass followed by the hectic racing of the strings. Ta-ta-ta-ta – ta-ta-ta-ta, the snare joins in, transporting us back to the damp battlegrounds of the 1917 Russian October Revolution. Everyone is sitting up straight, listening intently. Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is not a composition that leaves one unsatisfied.

Dec. 16th, 2016 – Some Good Ol’ Yuletide Dueling

December 8, 2016

If you managed to find yourself in Gastown this past Thursday evening, you may have found yourself in a very different Gastown. Sure, the cobblestoned streets were still of cobbled stones, the shop windows displaying their usual selection of souvenirs , and the bare trees adorned in typical festive holiday fashion – Christmas is right around the corner after all. But then there’s the stuff that you don’t see every day. The marching band drumming their way up and down Water Street. Steaming cups of tea and hot chocolate handed out to those who braved the chilly night and the threatening sky. Babies in toques, down, and gloves wiggling their bodies to some Christmas tunes. Oh, and what’s that I hear? Carolers? Many, many, many carolers? (more…)

Nov. 22nd, 2016 – A Night at the Opera

November 28, 2016

Meet Kelly. Saint James Music Academy student. Young violinist. On Tuesday, he went to the opera, Engelbert Humperdinck’s adaptation of the Grimm’s Brothers’ Hansel and Gretel featuring the artwork of the Old Trout Workshop. When asked which portion of the experience was his favorite, Kelly’s response was unhesitatingly and unforgivingly clear: that “booty-shaking” forest creature. Half man, half bushy vegetation. Well, I will admit, I enjoyed that part too. (more…)

Oct. 27th, 2016 – Shoes or music? Shoes and music!

November 10, 2016

Shoes or music? Strings, brass, and woodwinds brought together with symphonic expertise or a pair of sleek leather shoes, sharp and stylish for the feet that wear them; and fashionably divine for the person that owns them? Hey now, you can argue all day and night, through heartache and headache, about which is truly the root of all life’s pleasures. But we here at the Saint James Music Academy would like to pose a more pertinent question: why bother? Bring the two together! And that’s what we did. Shoes and music; music and shoes; John Fluevog and the Saint James Music Academy. Because nothing is sweeter than foot-ful of leather and an earful of song (not to mention a glassful of grown-up grape juice in hand). (more…)
