OUR PROGRAMS

Core After-School Program

Music for Social Change: Making music together is at the heart of our afterschool programs where our young people are strengthened through a fun, engaging journey of becoming competent musicians and young leaders.  Our choirs and orchestras are communities of music making where each child discovers the important role they play through cooperation, team building and the collective pursuit of excellence.  We welcome children and youth into our Junior and Senior division.

  • Musical Literacy – Singing, Rhythm and Movement:  Beginning in our Junior Program, Music Theory and Musicianship are learned in our String Orchestra. We integrate all these elements and further support them through our choir, marimba and body percussion classes.
  • Instrument Instruction: All children in the Junior Program learn one of 4 string instruments: violin, viola, cello and double bass in an orchestra setting.  In our Senior Program, we offer all string instruments as well as brass, percussion and wind instruments taught in small group lessons and further developed through ensemble and orchestra rehearsals.
  • Musical Literacy and Advanced Theory: developed through the ongoing musical engagement in all levels of our Sr. Program
  • Choir:  All children are encouraged to participate in one of our 4 choirs and extra vocal support is offered to students based on need and ability
  • Collaborative Music: All children participate in orchestra & choir, and for our senior students we offer composer workshops, chamber music, jazz and fiddle ensembles

Nutrition Program

At SJMA we begin every day in our after-school program with a healthy, fresh meal for all children. Healthy food is integral to supporting a child’s learning, and so we choose foods that provide vital nutrients for optimum physical and mental health.  This shared meal also provides a place to build community and social cohesion.

Music Therapy Program

SJMA has made its program accessible to children with special needs.  Specialized one-on-one and group music therapy is offered to these students by certified Music Therapists. Music therapy is interactive, therapeutic and fun!  Our goal is to integrate every child into our core program as they grow in their capacity and interest in making music.

Concerts

Children celebrate their share success in public concerts that include instrumental ensembles, orchestra, and rousing choral presentations. Concerts are consistently ‘standing room only’, as parents and family, friends and supporters, the media, and others in our community shared in the thrill of what our children have achieved.

Youth Mentorships

At SJMA our advanced and graduated students “give back,” by assisting and becoming mentors to younger children. As guides and role models, they support new students, and provide classroom support, including music instruction.

Give the Gift of Music

Our work would not exist without your compassion and generosity. We hope that you will engage us with the gift that is YOU by arranging to visit the Academy or by attending one of our semi-annual concerts. Let’s stay connected, and together make a difference in our world. Thank you for supporting Saint James Music Academy.
