Oct. 27th, 2016 – Shoes or music? Shoes and music!

Shoes or music? Strings, brass, and woodwinds brought together with symphonic expertise or a pair of sleek leather shoes, sharp and stylish for the feet that wear them; and fashionably divine for the person that owns them? Hey now, you can argue all day and night, through heartache and headache, about which is truly the root of all life’s pleasures. But we here at the Saint James Music Academy would like to pose a more pertinent question: why bother? Bring the two together! And that’s what we did. Shoes and music; music and shoes; John Fluevog and the Saint James Music Academy. Because nothing is sweeter than foot-ful of leather and an earful of song (not to mention a glassful of grown-up grape juice in hand).

On October 27th, the Saint James Music Academy partnered with Fluevog Shoes for the fifth annual Shoes and Music Fundraiser. A rainy Thursday in typical Vancouver autumn fashion, raindrops on the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Gastown store became puddles on the cobblestoned sidewalks. Outside, downright miserable. Inside? Quite the contrary. Warm amongst the old brick walls, a piece of chocolate cake here and a piece of lemon merengue there, and above all, surrounded by all the magnificent beauty found in shoes and music. Shoes: the brainchild of John Fluevog’s twisted and genius imagination, sustainably crafted with all the finest colors and patterns offered to the world of shoes. And music: well, it’s in our name. The evening featured performances by the SJMA Senior Choir, Fiddle Group, and Chamber Group, with everything from Joni Mitchell classics and bluegrass favorites to tunes infused with a bit of Latin flair.

A wonderful event it was; and a wildly successful one at that. With 50% of all shoe sales that evening going towards programs at the Saint James Music Academy, we managed to raise a total (and so proudly our best year yet) of $8,300! We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Fluevogs for their continued support of the SJMA and their commitment to all the possibilities that present themselves when business and non-profits come together; to Trump Fine Foods for their contributions in making it a delicious evening; and to all who came out, bought shoes, and supported our kids. Thank you!
