Welcome to the Saint James Music Academy! If you are looking for a volunteering experience that is meaningful and memorable, moving and encouraging, you are in the right place. Helping out with snack time, offering 1-on-1 piano lessons, making sure that children know where to go and how to get there, decorating the chapel for the Christmas recital – to put it bluntly, there would be no music school without the hard work and generous contributions that our team of over 50 volunteers put in each year.
About our program
The SJMA’s Core Afterschool Program runs four days a week, from Mondays to Thursdays, and is attended by over two-hundred students. For those in the Senior (grades 4 to 12) program on Mondays and Wednesdays, the focus is on orchestra, a space of artistic creation that brings together personal devotion to the art alongside teamwork, collaboration, and mutual support and encouragement. For our Junior students (kindergarten to grade 3) on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the focus is on fostering a love for music and a culture of sharing and care through experimentations with various instruments and group classes such as Kodaly and choir. In all this, the objective is not necessarily the training of a talented musician but far more importantly, the upbringing of a genuine, compassionate, and empowered person and an active and positive role model in the community.
Your commitment to the SJMA
As a volunteer, you are expected to work at least 1 shift a week for 1 semester (September – December or December – June) for a minimum of 2 hours every shift. Our programs run Mondays to Thursdays from 3:00pm to 6:30pm (on Mondays and Wednesdays) and to 6:00pm (on Tuesdays and Thursdays). Volunteering shifts start as early as 1:30pm with our Nutrition and Snack program and end as late as 6:45pm. Because our work is so dependent on our volunteers, if for some reason you are unable to attend a scheduled shift, it is your responsibility to notify us beforehand. At least a 24 hour notice is preferable so we can reach out to other volunteers to cover the shift if necessary. All volunteers over the age of 18 will also be required to complete a Criminal Record Check (which, fortunately enough, will be free-of-charge).
The SJMA’s commitment to you
At the SJMA, we believe in creating a volunteering experience that will offer you opportunities to learn, to challenge yourself, and to grow. You are donating your time and we want to make sure you that it is worth your time. Volunteering begins with a orientation session where you will get a chance to see what the program really is about, interact with some of the students and staff, and have a conversation about what you want to achieve with your time here. This will be followed by check-ins each semester (or as requested by you), continued support from the SJMA Volunteer Coordinator and other staff, and an end-of-the-year volunteer appreciation event.
